Local Teen’s Act of Kindness Brightens Day for Young Patients at Marian Regional Medical Center
SANTA MARIA, CA – Feb. 13, 2025 – Sophia Ferreira, a 17-year-old high school student, brought a wave of Valentine’s Day cheer to the Pediatric Unit at Marian Regional Medical Center.
Inspired by her own childhood experience as a patient, Ferreira donated 40 Valentine’s Day-themed gift boxes, filling young patients’ days with joy and reminding them of the kindness within the community.
Ferreira’s journey began when, at the age of 4, she underwent emergency surgery for a rare bacterial infection. Her extended hospital stay, far from home, left a lasting impression, fueling Ferreira’s desire to give back.
Building on her participation in St. Patrick Catholic School’s “Mercy Projects,” and encouraged by her AVID program teacher at Arroyo Grande High School, she organized the Valentine’s Day gift drive. Each box contained thoughtful items designed to bring comfort and smiles to the young patients, like crayons, coloring books, and stuffed animals.
Ferreira’s act of kindness extends beyond the immediate impact on the children. “I hope this inspires other young people to find ways to make a difference in their communities,” she says. “You never know how much a small gesture can mean to someone else.”
“I am very proud of her,” Sophia’s mother Marcela added. “Young people these days are not as thoughtful as they once were. She selflessly put this together and accomplished it all. I am just very proud.”
“I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Sophia for her generous donation to Marian’s Pediatric Unit,” said Candice Monge, Chief Nurse Officer. “Her kindness and selflessness will make a lasting impact on the lives of many children and families in need of care. I am deeply moved by your compassion, and as the Chief Nurse Officer, I can attest to how your contribution will enhance the healing environment for our young patients. Thank you for your remarkable generosity and for setting an inspiring example for all of us.”
